New school campus ready to welcome pupils

-

THE new £60m King’s School campus will welcome its first pupils through the doors on Thursday, September 3.

Despite difficulties caused by the Covid pandemic for contractors Vinci, the site, off Alderley Road, Prestbury, has been finished in time for the start of the academic year.

It brings the school onto one site as opposed to the three it previously occupied and is a major milestone in its 500-year history.

New headteacher Jason Slack, who has taken over from Doctor Simon Hyde, said: “A major advantage of the new school is, quite simply, the immense amount of space we have inside and outside the building which will enable us to meet the new

(Covid) guidelines.

“It has been an incredibly busy summer for staff with the move as well as getting ready for opening in a Covid-safe way in September, but the prize of the stunning new campus makes all the hard work worth it.

“And in some ways, the opening will be even more special because of the difficult year. More than ever, the excitement of coming together as a single community on 3rd September will have a greater significance.”

Facilities include a music recital hall, conference hall for 900 people, lecture theatre, drama and performance hall, art gallery, sports centre with swimming pool and science gardens.

The King’s School was founded in 1502 in a small chapel of St Michael’s Parish for just for a handful of boys.

It now has 1,200 mixed pupils aged three to 18.
