MP backs calls for Amar to step down

- ALEX SCAPENS

MACCLESFIELD Town fans calling for majority shareholder Amar AlKadhi to step down have been joined in their plea by MP David Rutley.

As the dust settles on the Silkmen’s relegation out of the English Football League (EFL) it is hoped this will at least finally be the catalyst for change.

Many blame Mr AlKadhi and the way he has run the club for its financial woes, points deductions and eventual demotion to the National League.

Mr Rutley, who said Macc were ‘disproportionately targeted’ by the EFL, has called for the club to find a ‘sustainable future’.

He said: “Following the sad news, it’s clear that a fresh start is needed at Macclesfield Town.

“The club’s owner needs to urgently work with interested parties to establish a truly sustainable future that our loyal fans and local residents expect and deserve.

“W e need to get back to the tradition of being able to punch above our weight on the pitch without off the pitch distractions, and the community needs to be at the heart of future plans.

”I will continue to do all that I can to assist in this important task.

“But action needs to be taken quickly - the clock is ticking.”

The Silkmen Supporters’ Trust (SST) has also made an emotional plea to Mr AlKadhi to finally leave the club.

Chairman Andy Worth has urged him to sell his controlling stake at the Moss Rose and there has also been talk of starting a ‘phoenix club’ alternative version of Macclesfield Town.

Andy said in a statement: “Silkmen fans across the board were unanimous in their view that they will not return to the Moss Rose until Amar AlKadhi has absolutely no involvement, and that there is growing support towards the concept of a phoenix club.

“Trust is a powerful concept that is difficult to define but when there is no trust, there is bound to be a withdrawal of energy and engagement.

“This is clearly the case between Amar and our passionate fanbase, and the level of withdrawal and dis-engagement will increase very markedly in the coming weeks and months.

“We therefore urge Amar to sell the club as soon as possible, and in the interim, we as the SST would be happy to receive his shares and act as custodians of the shares until we have an owner that wants to develop the club into the wonderful community focused club that it has been and can be in the future.”
