Olympic champ to put wheels in motion at charity’s new HQ

- ALEX SCAPENS

THE opening of a charity’s new Macclesfield headquarters is on track to be a special occasion - the ribbon will be cut by Olympic gold medal cyclist Sir Chris Hoy.

The Samaritans of Macclesfield and District will move to its new premises at 9 King Edward Street in September.

And to mark the occasion the new home will be officially opened by the bike legend, who is a sixtimes Olympic champion.

Currently the charity is located at Boden Street having been established in Macclesfield

1963.

The branch has a team of more than 90 volunteers, who take more than 20,000 calls and emails a year, as well as having an outreach programme and listening service.

George Blackledge, Macclesfield branch director, said: “I am immensely proud of how all our volunteers have contributed during this unprecedented period.

“Whether ensuring the call rota is filled or preparing the new building for the rest of the team, everyone has played their part throughout.

“Although our current location has served us well, the new premises at

since

King Edward Street provide a more flexible layout, better accessibility and a more supportive environment for our volunteers.”

The current premises were opened by Princess Alexandra in 1990.

This time Sir Chris will be joined by a small guest list to ensure Covid social distancing rules can be adhered to.

George said: “Whilst the current situation has made the relocation a little more challenging, we intend to mark the occasion with a low key opening ceremony that will provide a few of our generous supporters and partners the opportunity to see our new premises.

“Prior to this, all our volunteers will have received a personal tour and induction, ready to take calls, and, when conditions allow, meet faceto-face with people as well.”

Samaritans offers round the clock support for anyone who is struggling to cope, or who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure.

The charity has thanked Tailored Office Solutions, Tunnicliffe Signs, LSG Cheshire, Macclesfield Lock and Safe, A1 Cleaning Services, Francis Fire Protection Services and Arighi Bianchi for their help in opening the new premises.
