Ex pub now to serve up vital support for vulnerable adults

- ALEX SCAPENS

SUPPORTED living accommodation for vulnerable adults will be built in Macclesfield after permission was given to convert a former pub.

Planners at Cheshire East Council gave the thumbs up to an application to turn what was the Weston Public House, on Earlsway, into 10 flats.

The applicant is from a company called Earlsway Ltd but the development would be leased to Blue Square Residential.

This organisation provides accommodation for vulnerable adults whose support needs include physical disabilities, learning disabilities and mental health.

Some residents in the area had objected to the proposals with the issues being highlighted including the pressures on parking and the local infrastructure such as GP surgeries.

Concerns over the risk to the community from tenants at the premises were also raised.

One objector stated: “We are worried for the safety of local children and young people.”

Other letters of support were sent to the council, including one from a resident that had previously objected but was happy with amendments made to the plans.

The accommodation would have a communal lounge, garden and kitchen areas with the one-bed apartments as well as care staff on site round the clock.

Also included are nine parking spaces and storage for eight bikes.

Agents for the development Satplan say the council has confirmed there is a need for accommodation for vulnerable adults in the borough.

A report says: “In designing the scheme care has been taken to ensure that the proposals both meet the needs of future residents, in respect of both design and access, whilst also protecting the amenity of existing residents.”

Matthew Keen, council planning officer, said:

“The concerns from the neighbours are noted, however the principle of this supported living accommodation is acceptable. The proposal would have an acceptable impact on the character of the area and no significant neighbouring residential amenity issues are raised.”
