Speed king Joe races to track glory

- ALEX SCAPENS

ATEENAGE speeddemon has hit speeds exceeding 100mph to be crowned a national motor racing champion - winning every race.

Joe Loake, 15, from Macclesfield, was top of the podium eight out of eight times to claim the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championships.

This is despite being too young to hold a driving licence and two years the junior of many of the other drivers.

His love of the track began with go karting trips alongside his dad Steve and then becoming a member of the karting club at All Hallows College.

Joe, of Congleton Road, said: “I love the pure thrill of being on the limit, when I get in the car I don’t just want to drive I want to get the fastest lap and I love racing. It’s a good way to get your foot on the motor sports ladder. Like every driver the goal is to get into Formula One.

“But I would like to make a career in it in whatever way and be paid to drive.”

The season lasted from March to October and involved four meetings, each with two races.

Joe, who also lives with mum Moira, won every one and the season was completed just before the second lockdown was announced.

It is hoped that next season will run as normal from March and once Covid restrictions are eased Joe and his team can begin testing cars.

He will be going for the hat trick as he was also BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championships winner in 2019.

Moira said: “His driving has gone from strength to strength and it is great to see him win. The manner in which he conducts himself as a 15-year-old is remarkable, we are immensely proud.

“I’m extremely nervous every time he drives and I hear the roar of the engines, he is a great driver but you never quite know what is going to happen.”
