Just rubbish! A thief grabs gift for binmen

- BY ALEX SCAPENS

A‘ VILE’ thief stole goodies left out as a Christmas gift of thanks to bin men for their hard work throughout the Covid pandemic.

Steve Leonard, 52, of Macclesfield, wanted to show his gratitude so left a bag containing beers, chocolate biscuits and Tunnock cakes on top of his black bin on Thursday morning (December 17).

But before the waste disposal crew arrived a man in a blue van stopped at the end of drive, on College Court, leaned out to grab the treat and sped off.

Steve caught the despicable act on CCTV.

He said: “I normally leave something out anyway but this year with them working so hard through lockdown even though there is a risk I thought it might cheer them up. Whoever did this is scum, a pretty low individual.

“He drove up looking for things to steal, a lot of people will have left stuff out like this.

“Someone may know who he is but I want people to be aware this has gone on and there has been something stolen off a driveway.”

Steve describes the thief as a white male and says the van is a ‘tatty’, blue Citroen.

With the value of the theft small he has not reported it to police at what is a busy time of year for them.

Although the theft was captured on CCTV the camera did not manage to pick up a registration plate.

Steve, who is married with a daughter, said: “I’ll catch the bin men in two weeks time but this time I’ll stand with the present.

“They have worked so hard all year keeping people safe and not allowing rubbish to build up.”
