Owner to lift home out of flood danger

- ALEX SCAPENS

THE owner of a flood-hit house will raise part of it to keep it out of the way of excess water.

Salvatore Agro has suffered damage to his detached home in Poynton - an area known to be badly affected in periods of heavy rain.

So he came up with a plan to raise the level of the ground and first floor of the property - and Cheshire East Council has approved the scheme.

But a neighbour on South Park Drive, which is near Poynton Lake, objected, saying the proposals only serve to increase the risk for other homes.

Poynton has seen major flood incidents in 2019 and 2016 and the neighbour says the latter caused £90,000 of damage.

Mr Agro said: “The property is a detached house set within a large garden and had a two-storey rear extension some six years ago.

”Since then there has been flooding on the ground floor at the front of the property, partially due to this original part of the house being at a lower level.”

The approved plans are a revised version of a previous set, omitting an extension that raised concerns of overlooking the neighbour’s garden.

The neighbour has again objected, saying: “(My house) was severely affected by the flooding incident in Poynton in 2016, with more than £90k of damage to our property and significant disruption to our lives.

”We are deeply concerned that the proposed development will increase the risk of another flooding event to our property.”

Fears that the work would still cause the house to overlook others were considered but the distance and planted boundaries between properties meant this was not considered to be a problem.

Mr Agro’s application does not contain details of exactly how his house will be raised. Council planning officer Michael Coburn said: “It is not considered that the proposals will result in significant overbearing impact; loss of light or privacy to surrounding properties.”
