Covid may hit grit, but council ready
WITH predictions of colder and snowy weather over New Year residents have been warned gritting coverage could be affected by Covid.
Cllr Laura Crane, Cheshire East cabinet member for highways, says as gritting teams work closely together any positive Covid tests could mean a number of drivers having to isolate.
But she has also offered assurances that contingency plans are in place.
Cllr Crane said: “I want to thank our highways service for their commitment to the task of keeping our roads safe this winter and for the care they have taken in protecting themselves and their colleagues from this dreadful virus.
“Naturally, we hope that no one becomes ill but, as motorists, we need to understand that the normally high level of service they deliver could be impacted. If this were to occur, we would issue further communications to let motorists know.
“And, as we all know, if roads do become icy or snow-covered, we should adapt our driving behaviour accordingly.”
Salt stocks are said to be complete and teams at depots are operating in ‘gang bubbles’.
Should snow fall then motorists are asked to play their part by fully clearing snow and ice off their car and keeping extra distance from the vehicle in front.
Windscreen wash, wipers, lights, demisters and tyres should all be checked and particular care should be taken at junctions.
It is recommended emergency equipment, such as a torch, shovel, jump leads and a blanket are kept in your vehicle.
