Libraries head down the Amazon route for a new world order

-

LIBRARIES are using a new ‘Amazon style’ order and collect service where staff get given customer taste preferences and then predict what books they might like.

The scheme, introduced on

Monday, January 11, runs at Macclesfield Library, on Jordangate, as well as at Poynton, Prestbury and Bollington.

It is aimed at those who enjoy reading a physical book and want to do so throughout lockdown, allowing them to request up to eight titles at a time.

To take part readers must call or email their library to say what subject they are interested in as well as leave contact details and library card number.

Authors and genres can also be specified and a collection time organised.

Councillor Mick Warren, cabinet member for communities, said: “We are all adapting to different ways of living our lives during lockdown, so it’s a really positive thing to be able to adapt our services accordingly.

“I quite like the idea of our experienced librarians using their judgement to surprise our residents with choices.

“It’s a little bit like if you make a purchase on Amazon and it says, ‘if you liked this then you might also like these similar titles’.

“The new order and collect service enables residents to connect with their local library in a Covid-safe and secure way.”

Residents can use the service, which is running throughout Cheshire East, as many times as they like.

Staff cannot provide specific books requested but will try to provide the best possible matches.

Parents can use the service on behalf of children and people can collect for residents who are self-isolating.

Digital and online library services are also available.
