Sir Tom tribute is brush with fame

- ALEX SCAPENS

STUDENTS at a Macclesfield school have created a touching tribute to national hero Sir Captain Tom Moore.

The large painting, which measures 5ft by 5ft, was made in two days by pupils at the Fermain Academy under the guidance of art teacher Elisse Frobisher.

It will now be displayed at the school, on Beswick Street, and there are plans to ultimately auction it for charity.

Captain Tom, 100, inspired a nation during lockdown last year raising £32m for the NHS by walking 1,000 laps of his garden.

He sadly died in hospital on Tuesday, February 2, having contracted Covid-19 but his memory will now live on for some time.

Lucy Wheelton, from Fermain Academy, said: “They loved doing it, all of them knew who Captain Tom was and had a large amount of respect for him.

”The students have been so inspired by his actions and we wanted them to be inspired by the idea that anyone can make a big difference.

”It also opened up a conversation about all that is going on at the moment and what we can do about it.”

All students had input into the artwork, which is a portrait of Captain Tom and also features the motto ‘Tomorrow will be a good day’.

And everyone at the school is delighted with how it has turned out.

Lucy said: “The students are really proud of it and keep coming in the art room to say how good it looks.

”Some of them worked on it solidly all day.”

Headteacher Lee Cambray added: “I am so proud of all the students and the staff for their contributions to this fantastic tribute, especially Miss Frobisher for the work she does to inspire our students.”

The Fermain Academy is an alternative provision school for 13-16-yearolds who have social, emotional and behaviour difficulties and cannot attend mainstream schools.
