Scott’s fully focused on pro career

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

STYAL junior Scott Anderson, 14, has his sights firmly set on a career as a golf professional and has worked hard towards achieving this since he began playing seven years ago.

Scott lives in Clifton and is a student at St Ambrose Barlow RC High School in Salford.

At the age of seven he got into golf joining North West Golf Academy at Hart Common Golf Club and was coached by Steven Parry for seven years.

He played in their par 3 competitions on Sundays and later for the junior team in the Bolton and Bury league for four years, before moving to Styal Golf Club and playing in their competitions both on the par 3 and main course.

He came in the top three in seven competitions, winning the midsummer competition over six weeks and playing for Styal junior golf team which won their junior league in 2019.

Scott has also played for his High School in the Lancashire School Comp being the first and only Salford school boy to date, as golf is not the main sport played in Salford.

From last December he has changed coaches to Peter Barber, the Cheshire and England Boys coach and has worked this year on swing, technical, and core strength which is starting to come together.

Scott has played in junior opens in 2020 to gain experience at Wallasey, Fleetwood, Manchester Hopwood and Preston and he also plays in Styal men’s competition as and when he can and his current handicap is 19.

His golfing idol is Rory Mcllroy and his ambition is to become a golf professional.

Scott said: “I would like to thank my first coach Steve Parry, Peter Barber my current coach and my Dad for being there for me, taking me to competitions, training, building me a putting area and driving net in lockdown and not forgetting my friends, Dylan Bennett and Leah Butler who have been there to encourage me to get where I am today.”

His most recent success came at Sale Golf Club when he played against some of the top u16 junior boys and girls in the area in the Annual Joanne Morley Junior Challenge and won with a fine haul of 40 points.

Scott is working on, this winter on his core strength including his legs, to gain more power, he is up-to 83mph on his irons and 97mph on his driver.

Peter Barber wants these up-to 87mph + (irons) and 100mph +(Driver).

He is working on his long irons four and five to get the same consistency as short irons.

He is also working on his wedges getting the feel on different distances with half, full, 1/4 & 3/4 swings.

He started this year on 23.3 handicap and finished on 19.2.

Scott was looking to come down some more but with Covid taking most of the year out he hasn’t been able to going until August/ September.

Scott is looking at achieving around a 10 H/C for 2021, with the great coaching from Peter Barber and fitness trainer James Thompson each week and putting in a lot of hard work, he is confident of achieving it, if not bettering it.

The Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs is to return over £100,000 to golf in the County. All affiliated Golf Clubs are to receive a sum of money to assist them after this unprecedented year in which many have seen green fee income affected by closed courses and coronavirus restrictions.

In addition, a further sum of money is to be made available by the CUGC to the County’s Junior Committee to assist in promoting junior golf within Cheshire.

County President David Durling said: “The hope is that the Clubs will use this money to support Junior golf, in particular to assist families that have suffered financial hardship, thereby enabling young people to continue to play golf in these difficult times. In addition, there is the opportunity for the Clubs to attract more young people to take up the game.”

The County, which has just celebrated its Centenary in November, has built up reserves over the years by the careful management of the affiliation fees paid by the Clubs on behalf of their members, and believes that the time is now right to return some of those funds to support the game of golf in Cheshire.
