Music man fans flames of love for the Silkmen

- ALEX SCAPENS

AMUSICIAN and Macclesfield FC fan has recorded a love song with the object of his affection - the new incarnation of the Silkmen.

Greg Jackson, 35, from Broken Cross, has been a fan of the club since a young age and regularly attended games at the Moss Rose with his dad and friends until lockdown hit.

He was devastated when the club became mired in difficulties and released a fundraising number called Save Our Silkmen in October but sadly Macc were wound up

o when Rob Smethurst relaunched a phoenix club the song was reconfigured into a more optimistic number called Super Silkmen and will be released on March 12.

Greg said: “Super Silkmen captures the experience and essence of supporting Macclesfield. The lyrics are poignant, nostalgic, and full of pride.

”It is a love song in the purest sense that will no doubt prove moving for many Silkmen supporters and will galvanise them as the club embarks on its new beginning.”

The original song was a call to arms for fans and aimed to raise the money necessary to stave off the club’s financial problems.

Now the new version will raise funds for Macclesfield FC as well as the Silkmen Supporters Trust to help both thrive.

During the brief period where lockdown was eased last year fans including Matthew Boycott-Garnett, Sue Nicholls, Andy Worth, Sean Worth, John Souness, and Dean Holmes were invited to sing backing vocals.

Greg’s dad, mum and cousin also did this while he played all instruments and provided lead vocals.

Normally Greg is in a band called Glass Ankle - who will perform the song in due course - and it is being released on his own label Sleeper Train.

The new Macclesfield FC is due to start playing senior football again next season and the hope is it can work its way back up the divisions.

Greg hopes that fans will react to the song’s new version as positively as they did the original.

Its lyrics talk about keeping the faith and battling the odds as well as describing the highs and lows of a matchday experience.

Popular figures from the club such as Danny Whitaker, John Askey, Phil Power, Sammy McIlroy and Keith Alexander are also namechecked.

Andy Worth, from the Silkmen Supporters Trust, said: “Greg from Glass Ankle has worked so hard over the past few months to put together a really catchy song which I am certain will be a big hit with Silkmen fans and music lovers everywhere.

”How great would it be if we could get the song into the UK top 40 singles chart?

”The trust would like to offer our sincere thanks to Greg for all his endeavours, and Silkmen fans can be assured of the fact that every penny earned from the single will be ploughed into a project that will be of benefit to Silkmen fans and Macclesfield Football Club.”

Super Silkmen will be available on all major streaming and download platforms from Friday, March 12.
