Course accolade in centenary year

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

PRESTBURY Golf Club are looking forward to enjoying their revamped Centenary Year, which was largely cancelled in 2020 due to Covid in 2021.

They were delighted to be placed in the Golf World rankings as 87th in the top 100 courses in England.

The Golf World rankings are considered to be the ‘original’ and most established (for 32 years) in Europe, respected, trusted and authoritative golf course rankings and avidly followed by ‘opinion formers’ in golf.

The experienced 11-man panel, invited to take part because of their extensive knowledge assessed each course and said of Prestbury.

“A new entry for this Cheshire jewel, a classy parkland course designed by Harry Colt.

“He masterfully routed the course over often significantly rising and falling terrain to produce holes of great interest - and with sublime views of the surrounding countryside with wide playing areas and sandy soil – so it’s firm.”

David Holmes, the Prestbury manager said: “We are delighted to be included in Golf World’s list of the top 100 courses in England for the very first time.

“Prestbury has already featured in National Club Golfer’s Top 100 courses in England in 2018 and in their 2020 list of the Top 100 best value courses in Great Britain, so this latest accolade is testament to the hard work and dedication of our greenstaff, led by Course Manager, Mark Crossley.”

The Cheshire Golf Union is to celebrate its Centenary in 2021 after having the bulk of the planned celebrations in 2020 postponed due to the Corona virus and now rearranged for the coming year.

One of the top features of the year will be the release of its superb Centenary Book – The Cheshire Union of Golf ClubsOne Hundred Years which will be presented to clubs and available to obtain during 2021.

The book covers great detail of the action, clubs and outstanding county personalities over the past 100 year and one of the features is the CUGC Hall of Fame section covering CUGC legends.

Jamie was born in Pontypridd and when his family moved to Cheshire he joined Macclesfield Golf Club as a junior and he is still very involved with the club both on and off the course

He has the Jamie Donaldson room in the club as a tribute to his golfing career and connections with the club.

Trophy and one of the club ‘majors’ is for another trophy he presented to the club and on the competition day he aims to play on the day with every player for at least one hole.

When he won the Irish Open in 2012 the trophy he won was proudly displayed behind the bar at the club

He was delighted in the same year to be given the great honour of becoming a Life Vice President of Macclesfield.

He is only the second person in the history of the club to be given this title the other being the legendary Fred Daly.

Jamie has also shown great interest in the Macclesfield course helping out the green staff in various projects over the years.

He rapidly established himself as a leading young player and won the 1997 Welsh Amateur Championship and followed this up in 2000 by winning the Welsh Amateur Amateur Strokeplay Championship. After which he turned professional.

He quickly established himself on the European Tour where he recorded three wins.

His greatest moment in golf came in the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles where his approach shot to within inches of the hole secured his match against Keegan Bradley and a memorable win for Europe.
