Playing return ‘everything’ to Silkmen legend
MACCLESFIELD manager Danny Whitaker has said it will ‘mean everything’ to him when Macclesfield FC start playing next season.
Whitaker had returned from retirement last season to play for Macclesfield Town, but the club went into administration just a day after he resigned.
“It was the best and worst week of my career” the Silkmen legend said.
“I drove home absolutely buzzing, and then the next day it was the news nobody wanted and next week that was it”.
But Whitaker has said he believes the new club is heading a direction which means things have worked out for the best for both football in Macclesfield and the town itself.
“End of the day I’m a fan” Whitaker explained.
“Looking at it from a fan’s perspective, it’s an incredible scenario and turn around from what had happened to what is happening.
“It’s going to be an amazing thing town.”
Whitaker also wants to capitalise on the momentum and good atmosphere that has been building around the new club to boost his team’s performances when they kick off next year.
“To go through the turmoil for the past couple years… it all crashed and burned and disappeared.
“But then to just rise up like we have done in the past 4/5 months; the momentum that’s building, I’m just praying we can keep that going when we do kick off.
“You never know in football, no matter how hard you work and how hard you plan.”
Whitaker revealed that for the he hasn’t just been preparing for next season during lockdown, however:
“I’ve been mainly looking after the kids because my wife is full-time.”
But he still has time to watch as much football as he can
“I watch everything, I’m football mad.
“I watch it a lot differently now than I used to; I watch it to learn now.
“I think differently; what’s this teams’ tactics In possession and out of possession?
He revealed he enjoyed watching Manchester City and Leicster City the most, and was full of praise for their Northern Irish manager Brendan Rodgers.
“Leicester, I love watching,” he said. “Rodgers is a fantastic manager, the way he man manages and gets his players playing for him is unbelievable.”
And he’s British as well which is great to see.”
He also spoke about his favourite season in a blue shirt: the promotion bid back to league 2 a few seasons ago.
“It was against all odds: we had one of the lowest budgets and to do that was incredible.”
