President Elaine ready for action
ELAINE Fawkes has enjoyed over 30 years as a member of Prestbury Golf Club, with playing success and official positions within the club structure.
Now she is looking forward to being the Lady President at her beloved club and hoping like the rest of golfers in the region that golf can soon return to action with a busy and exciting year ahead.
Elaine said: “My husband Mike and I moved to Prestbury 36 years ago and bought a house overlooking Prestbury golf course.
“Mike, being a keen golfer joined the golf club and I had played tennis, netball and squash but never golf.
“After a few years of watching the golfers in action over the fence and going to the club for social functions I decided that I would like to join them.
“Then I was hooked! I met Linda Buckley who took me under her wing and we ended up making a very useful foursomes pair enjoying success as winners of the ladies foursomes knock out and in the Daily Mail Foursomes knock out we reached the final at Royal Porthcawl.
“I also won the club’s mixed foursomes knockout with Mike, two years running.
“I served on the ladies committee and was honoured when asked to be Lady Captain in 2011. I had a really great year and would like to thank the ladies section for their support in making it so.
“We have a super ladies section and senior ladies section who both enjoy their competitive golf and also fun and social events. The mixed section is also very enjoyable with competitions always filled up with lots of fun and social golf.
“We are lucky to be playing such a challenging and well kept golf course – In the top 100 in England!
“I’m looking forward to my year as Lady President supporting Lady Captain, the ladies committee and the club especially with the revised Centenary celebrations that are planned- A lot to look forward to!!”
The Manchester and District Society of Past Lady Captains were very disappointed to lose their programme of matches in 2020 due to the Covid Pandemic.
Pat Lees from Stockport Golf Club was delighted to be chosen as the
MDSPLGC Captain for 2021 and is looking forward to an exciting year ahead in her new role.
Pat has a strong background in golf after a relatively late start in the game as she explained: “I am a mother three and held a job as an educational photographer and a magistrate for 15 years so golf was not on the cards until my forties.
”I joined Stockport Golf Club in1992/93 and was selected for the ladies committee in1997 for three years in the role of Team Secretary
“I am currently on committee again for another three years as Match Coordinator and I was Lady Captain in 2006/2007
“The venues for MDSPLGC fixtures in 2021 are: Greensome Stableford Competitions over 18 Holes as qualifiers for the Trophy final played at
North Manchester Golf Club On June 11 and at
Disley Golf Club July 19.
“Also in 2021 we are trying a single stableford 9-Hole Competition for the ladies who cannot get round 18 Holes and this will be played at Ashton on Mersey Golf Club July5.
“The Trophy final is traditionally played at the Lady Captain’s club and this will be at Stockport GolfClub August 13
“We have an annual luncheon in October usually at Lancashire Cricket Club which is always very well attended
“I feel very honoured to have been put forward for this role by Stockport GC and I am looking forward to it.
“We have all suffered this year and the golf has been non-existent so we have been unable to have our meetings and the competitions and very little if any socialising so hopefully 2021 will be a great year for golf at all levels.”
