Women look write back to make sure young get message
FEMALE residents at a care home celebrated International Women’s Day by creating inspiring messages to their younger selves.
Woman at Mount Hall, on Flash Lane, Bollington, used the occasion to reflect on their lives and think what they may have liked to have done differently.
And it is hoped the messages they then came up with can also be words of encouragement the next generation of women.
Advice the group would give youngsters of today included, enjoy the simpler things in life and taking time to appreciate what you have, especially time with family.
They also suggested that women should never shy away from ambitious goals when it comes to building a career and learning new hobbies. One of the residents, called Jean, shared her life story saying she was a special operations executive in the British Army, travelling to France and Italy, where she met her husband, Brian.
The couple returned to
England and got married in 1947, before moving to Egypt and having two children together.
In 1954 Jean separated from her husband and again went back to England where she worked as a secretary and a teacher.
After retiring in her 60s she wrote her own unpublished autobiography and moved to Bollington to be close to her daughter.
Her advice to her younger self and other young girls would be: “Firstly, enjoy travelling while you’re young, for work and pleasure. You never know where you might meet new friends or a future partner. “Secondly, it is never too late to change your career path, even as a single mother. The future is unpredictable, and it is important to support yourself and your family through taking opportunities.”
Joanne Angell, manager at Mount Hall, said: “Our residents have led such full and inspiring lives. We love listening to stories of their past and reflecting on how times have changed.” new
