Marathon DJ aiming to spin charity record

- ALEX MCINTYRE

ARADIO DJ will be trying to break the world record for the longest solo broadcast – which currently stands at more than 200 hours.

Steve Evans, from Macclesfield, will begin his usual Late Night Friday show on ITM Radio at 10pm on September 17 and aims to stay on the airwaves until at least 2pm on September 26.

This would be 208 hours in total, which would beat the current Guinness World Record of 207 hours, one minute and 16 seconds held by Spanish DJ Mario Blanco Real.

As well as hoping to break the record, Steve is also aiming to raise as much money as he can for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Steve, 47, will be based at the Hollin House Hotel near Bollington for the duration of his marathon broadcast, which will be live-streamed on the ITM Radio website.

He said the Guinness rules allow him to have a two-hour break every 24 hours as well as five minutes every hour.

Steve said: “I’m just going to try and wing it.

“The way that I am at the minute, I only get four hours of sleep a night anyway.

“I think it’s also a fiveminute break I’m allowed every hour but I’m trying to add it up and do six hours then have a half-hour break.

“I’m just going to try and have broken sleep, but very little of it.

“I think it’s doable but I’m not under any illusion it is going to be easy.”

The broadcaster was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014 and the health complications he suffered meant he is now permanently fed through a PEG tube into his stomach.

As well as having his own experiences, he said cancer had effected many people close to him and he had seen first hand the work done by Macmillan staff.

He said: “I think it’s disgusting that Macmillan nurses have to rely on charity and honest to God the work they do is amazing, they go above and beyond for everybody.

“They do stuff they don’t need to do, that nobody expects them to do, and they shouldn’t have to rely on us to fund it.

“But unfortunately that’s the way it is.”

Steve will be dedicating hourly slots to listeners and local businesses can get a sponsored slot for a £50 donation, during which the DJ will wear an item of branded clothing.
