Vandals hit children’s play areas

- ALEX SCAPENS

CHILDREN’S playgrounds are becoming hotspots for vandalism and other forms of anti-social behaviour.

Police have appealed for witnesses and increased patrols in response with Lyme Green Park, off Robin Lane, one area that is receiving extra attention.

There have been reports of vandalism and rowdy behaviour and this is described as an ‘ongoing issue’.

Priory Park, in Upton Priory, had £50,000 spent to upgrade it but is also seeing an increased police presence. PCSO James Barlow said: “This park was upgraded for local children to enjoy and have fun.

“However, I have been informed on a couple of occasions now that some children are bullying other children on the park including expletive language.

“Please can parents make sure their children are using the park responsibly and respectfully.”

And equipment was smashed up at Glastonbury Play Area, in Poynton, between Monday, April 26, and Tuesday, April 27. A picnic bench was also removed and set on fire nearby.

“This is mindless vandalism of a play area funded by local residents,” said a Cheshire Police spokesman, who appealed for witnesses.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 quoting reference number IML 974609 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

In last week’s Macclesfield Express we reported how police had received ‘numerous reports’ of anti-social behaviour in parks around the London Road South area of Poynton. Complaints included fighting, cannabis use, underage drinking, damage and bins set alight in play areas.
