Dropped catches prove costly for luckless Kerridge

- IAN BANKS

Kerridge 159 a.o Vs Glazebury 173/5 ANOTHER game where defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory, as Kerridge fell to a 14 run defeat at home to rivals Glazebury.

Winning the toss and bowling, Kerridge kept the runs down but found wickets few and far between with the visitors setting an example of how wickets in hand at the death are priceless in setting a competitive score of 173/5 from their 40 overs. Opposition skipper Stanier finished unbeaten on 77.

In reply, Kerridge scored aggressively from the off and, although they lost early wickets, found themselves 70 ahead of the rate at the halfway point.

Wickets continued to tumble but the run rate was still up there and with two wickets in hand, less than 20 runs were required but it wasn’t to be and they were all out inside the 35th over.

Kerridge were unlucky to fall so close but luck was definitely with the opposition as their top scorers were dropped a couple of times before really scoring and Kerridge lost 3 or 4 wickets in bizarre fashion, Will McGinnis (34) falling to a worldy from leg slip, James Knight (35) edging behind to a ball that spat from a pitch that was consistent throughout the day and showed no sign of any demons, Mark Birchenough (17) pulling a ball that ballooned onto the helmet then onto the stumps.

All set batsmen that would certainly have seen their team home otherwise.

That old phrase you hear so many timescatches win matches was never more apt. No win in six now and you won’t go any closer than Saturday’s game.

A trip to Trafford awaits Saturday to try and get a long awaited result. Thanks to the match sponsor, Mr and Mrs G Astle
