Porsche fan Simon gets on his bike for charity

- ALEX SCAPENS

SOME rapid fundraising has taken place after a car lover swapped his Porsche for a set of pedals.

Simon Griffiths, from Macclesfield, completed a sponsored bike ride from Salford Quays to Blackpool in aid of the Christie.

Within days he raised £1,500 and when he took part in the cycle he finished 90 minutes ahead of schedule.

Simon is more used to a different - even quicker - form of transport though.

He treated himself to a 1990 Porsche 911 Targa in 2010 when his children were grown up.

It is his most cherished possession and he is a member of the Porsche Owner’s Club, who donated generously to the cause when they found out Simon was raising money.

He said: “Buying this car was a dream come true, but it has been lifechanging for so many different reasons.

“Porsche isn’t just about the beautiful car, it’s about finding an incredibly special community of people who really do enrich your life in so many ways.

“Porsche owners are passionate people, and collectively we decided we wanted to do something amazing to support a regional charity.

“For very unfortunate reasons, a number of us have a close connection to the Christie. It’s an incredible cause and we really wanted to give something back. The backing I received was phenomenal.”

The Porsche dealership in Stockport, where the club regularly meets, also contributed sponsorship money.

Simon will take part in the event next year and six fellow club members have also agreed to join him.

Some members of the club weer even in Blackpool to welcome Simon when he arrived.

He said: “It was incredibly humbling and really illustrated how many people could relate to the cause.

“The Porsche club members are so passionate about helping good causes and as such a huge community of likeminded people, there’s so much we can do to help.”
