Old King Cash seems to have lost his crown

-

I SOLD a dog whistle today to one of my clients.

She was very pleased and asked for my bank details as she had no cash.

Later that day I tried to buy a coffee in a local café and was asked to pay by card.

I offered the vendor a £5 note but she shook her head.

Even taxi drivers are reluctant to take cash, offering 10 per cent discount if you download their app.

What’s going here?

Clearly cash is not king any more.

People don’t carry it and traders don’t want it.

What sort of society are we becoming?

Some years ago I was mugged in the park by a thug demanding cash.

I only had a fiver but it was enough for him to skedaddle.

Can you imagine what might have happened had I asked for his bank details?

I’d probably still be in hospital.

And it gets worse... suppose I only had Bitcoins, which as far as I know are a cryptocurrency (I just Googled that).

What the hell would either of us have done? on,

I didn’t have them but if I had he probably wouldn’t accept them.

Look, it’s only my opinion but any form of currency that doesn’t satisfy the needs of the payer (me) or the payee (mugger) is seriously flawed.

If I can’t even carry out a transaction with a mugger what sort of currency is it?

I don’t carry lots of cash (mainly because I don’t have lots) but I do like to buy my three-year-old grandson the odd ice cream without making a bank transfer.

Have you tried paying with a cheque recently?

I was asked if I wanted a quill pen the last time I did it.

You do not ‘present’ a cheque any more.

You take a photo on your bank app and make a transfer.

Yep, that right, you don’t need the cheque, just a photo of one.

How barking mad is that?

I mean if you paid by cheque for a new car and received a photo of a Ford Cortina you would not be best pleased.

I know you think it’s a joke but so was t’Internet and Facetube not long ago.
