Theatre group’s thrilling return

- ALEX SCAPENS

ACTORS will return to the stage in Macclesfield with their take on what is the longest-running thriller in Broadway history.

MADS Theatre Group will perform Deathtrap at the MADS Little Theatre, Lord Street, for six night.

It will be members’ first public appearance since the Cheshire One Act Drama Festival in March 2020.

As well as the recordbreaking run in New York, Deathtrap has also been previously performed by MADS - opening the 198687 season 35 years ago.

This new production is led by award-winning director Cameron Chandler and stars regulars Richard Shute, Andy Loxham, Suzanne Copeland, Steve Donnelly, as well as newcomer Neerja Sethi.

Suzanne, who plays

Helga Ten Dorp, said: “Having the theatre go dark for lockdown was really sad, so I’m just really happy to be back. MADS is buzzing again.

“I also love the symmetry of having appeared in the last play before we closed and being in the opening play too.”

The play, by Ira Levin, sees unknown writer Clifford Anderson mail his new thriller to award-winning Broadway author

Sidney Bruhl for comment.

Without a success to his credit for some years, Sidney plots with his reluctant wife Meera about how best to plagiarise the script and when Clifford turns up to discuss the play, events take a sinister turn.

MADS has also launched its first poetry anthology, called It Could Be Verse, which will be for sale.

It was complied during in lockdown and features 90 poems as well as illustrations.

The anthology costs £10 and is also available on the group’s website with proceeds going to upkeep of the theatre.

Deathtrap runs from Monday, September 27, to Saturday October 2. Doors open 7pm for 7.45pm.

Tickets cost £8 to £10 and can be bought from www.madstheatre.org or by calling the box office on 01625 611974.
