Eco credentials are in a hole on the road to ruin

GOOD morrow my merry Maxonians. I know we have talked much about the appalling record this council has for road works.

Despite their avowed goal to make Macclesfield the epi-centre of their drive to save the planet we see very little sign of urgency.

I had the misfortune to be stuck on London Road today on my way to Poynton. It was 5-30 pm on a gloriously sunny day with at least two hours of daylight left and not a soul working on the major roadworks at Bonis Hall Lane.

There was a queue of standing traffic spewing out enough CO2 to paralyze a whale stretching back from the traffic lights to the Tytherington roundabout and a similar line of stationary traffic heading in the opposite direction.

How do Cheshire East expect us to believe in their eco credentials when we see this total lack of urgency in getting the job done to reduce this kind of pollution?

I was sent this article recently from the good people of North Rode:

“Google maps also does not differentiate for cars and trucks and we are now seeing more HGV’s passing through the village, in contravention to the 7.5T weight limit in place. This is not helped by the fact that almost all entry points to the lanes of North Rode are guarded by faded, illegible and missing HGV restriction signs. The Police have indicated that without adequate 7.5T restriction signs in place, they are unable to effectively enforce the restrictions.”

The lack of urgency in keeping the roads clear thus avoiding toxic emissions to poison the air is stunning. This is clearly a council that knows no bounds in its desire to follow the trodden path no matter where it leads in a monkey-see monkey-do fashion.

Most of us would agree that the earth needs protecting as do the residents and holding on to outdated work practices more suitable for the horse and cart era inspires no one. Allowing thousands of vehicles to stand idle while workers pack up and go home when conditions for work are as perfect as they will ever be is madness.

We all understand that winter working in rain, snow and sub-zero temperatures with short daylight hours maybe more difficult. Even more reason to get the work done when the days are long and conditions good.

If we are to believe the ceaseless eco statements emanating from this council we need to see their actions match their words. Changing working practices in any industry is not easy but it has to be done to keep pace with the world in which we live.

If Tesco and Sainsbury’s can employ staff until midnight simply because customers want to shop Cheshire East can keep important highway works going until the sunsets?

Over to you councillors.
