Cyclist is sent flying in horror road crash

- EXPRESS REPORTER

SHOCKING dashcam images show the moment a Macclesfield cyclist and car collided.

Jack Schofield, 27, was sent flying into the air after being hit by a car, which he claims had cut across a mini-roundabout in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

The cyclist says he was lucky to escape without any serious injuries following the collision with the Toyota Yaris on Thursday, September 16.

The incident, in Burton Road near Ashby Primary School, was caught on another driver’s dashcam and the footage was sent to Jack’s phone as he was being taken away in an ambulance.

He avoided being seriously hurt but was left badly bruised with a broken toe and has vowed to claim damages for the ‘trashed’ bike, injuries and loss of work.

He said: “I’m really lucky, it’s phenomenal I wasn’t more injured.

“95 per cent of the time the outcome is the cyclist doesn’t walk away, but I think I’ve broken my toe and that’s about it.

“There was a mini roundabout - one of the painted ones.

“I’m coming in to turn right and the car is coming from my left.

“But rather than letting me go or going around the driver has come the wrong way and drove straight into me.

“We crashed head on. She’s treated it as though there was no roundabout.”

Jack, who is a photographer and competes in triathlons, was able to get back up and an ambulance was called before he spent five hours in hospital. He said: “I want drivers to see and think before they cut a corner or overtake a cyclist.

“If I can get one person to think twice about cutting a roundabout that’s a success. I’ve had friends who aren’t that lucky - as a cyclist you’re just so vulnerable.

“I’m incredibly sore, bruised and shaken - but luckily there was no lasting damage.” A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: “A call was received from a motorist reporting she had been involved in a collision with a cyclist in Derby Road, Ashby.

“She said she had contacted the East Midlands Ambulance Service on the cyclist’s behalf. The driver’s details were taken and enquiries into the incident are continuing.”
