40th celebration at last for Avro

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

AVRO Golf Club, situated on the border of Stockport and Macclesfield, may not be the biggest golf club in Cheshire but it has a great community spirit which was celebrated in style and enjoyed by members, family and friends at a very special day for the club.

Avro official Alan Brandwood said: “The 40th anniversary of Avro becoming an affiliated club was actually last year, 2020, but we couldn’t hold the celebration because of the pandemic, so we decided to hold it now and jointly share it with the official clubhouse opening.

“The clubhouse lounge had a conservatory style plastic roof that was very worn and needed replacement. The toilet block was also very outdated and in poor condition. We decided to replace the roof with an EPDM rubber warm roof construction. This was fitted by a local roofing company.

“At the same time we upgraded the lounge lighting to include 48 new ceiling lights, completely redecorated throughout and fitted new ECO friendly heaters. We also refitted and redecorated the locker rooms and lobby area, all with new flooring and ceiling tiles.

“For the toilets refurbishment, we completely gutted the existing toilets and fitted new ceilings, flooring, tiling, sanitaryware and cupboards. We did all this work using our own labour, except for the tiling, flooring and electrical work. A large group of our members have been thanked for their efforts.

“The project cost £45,000 which was partially funded by a £15,000 grant from Sport England, an £8,000 grant from England Golf, and £5,500 in donations and fundraising from our members. The balance came from our own resources.

“The fun events included a 9-hole Greensome competition, a putting challenge, a chipping challenge, a ‘ Whack the marshmallow’ challenge, singing provided by local duo ‘The Macs’, and music provided by our President, Dave Hulley.

“Going forward, we plan to use the clubhouse to get back to more social activities, attract new members and use for functions. As a club, we’re in a phase of bringing our governance up to date, have adopted the England golf Safeguard policy, and are in the process of signing up to the Women in Golf Charter. We are also very proud of our active and growing junior section led by Junior Captain Beth Tweedale.”

BRILLIANT effort from the U9 girls as they played Frodsham with only four girls and two playing their first ever league games.

Sporting from Frodsham to only put out four girls to even things up and the game swung backwards and forwards.

Grace Jackson opened the scoring on her debut and two from Olivia Hadley-Davies earned the draw. Good goalkeeping from Grace Barnes in the first half and the usual energetic performance from Niamh.

In the second game Appleton sportingly lent Macc a player to even the sides but it was Macc that dominated from the kick off with Olivia unplayable. Star of the show was undoubtedly Olivia with six goals, the other coming from Niamh. But it was an all-round team performance with the Graces’ keeping things tight at the back.

The U11 team took on Barnton FC. A superb game, with Girl of the Game and new player Molly Filan holding strong alongside Bethany Wightman and Izzy Dawson in defence, despite pressure from Barnton. Accurate passing in Midfield from Lily Storey, Jocelyn Ball and Maddie Barlow assisted Elsie Wall in bagging a strong hat-trick for Macc across the first half.

A looping goal-kick from Ffion Barlow made it all the way to the opposition crossbar, rebounding for Autumn Greensmith to drive home a great finish, with Barnton answering through a neat cross and strike to score at the other end. In the second half, great teamwork from the girls, two excellent saves from Ffion and a fourth goal for Elsie from a difficult angle rounded off a confident team performance from Macc.

In their long-awaited opening fixture against a newly formed Runcorn side, the Under 12s were held to a goalless draw. Jaya Wilkinson put in a Girl of the Game performance in nets and made some assured saves, distributing the ball confidently from the back. The opening half saw our girls hit the back of the net twice only to be called back for offside! Some lovely wing play on the
