Mum left in a flap as wild animals invade her home

- ALEX SCAPENS

AYOUNG mum says a housing association’s failure to fix a cat flap means wild animals are getting into her home - including a squirrel in her bedroom.

Callie Rooney, 22, took over the tenancy of her maisonette on Earlsway, Macclesfield, from her late grandad in January 2019 after he passed away.

The cat flap, which even pre-dated her grandad, lost its flap nine months ago leaving a large hole at the bottom of the door.

Despite Callie’s attempts to block it up she says mice are regularly coming through it and she was left particularly shocked to see a squirrel.

She says this is just one of a string of complaints she has made to landlords Peaks and Plains since moving in - and that none of them have been resolved.

Callie, who gave birth to daughter Sienna four months ago, said: “The problems have slowly but surely built up as there were no repairs during Covid unless they were emergencies. We’ve had a squirrel in the bedroom and are getting more mice as it gets warmer.

“I currently have a tea towel covering the hole as it’s letting in all kinds of weather elements.”

Callie, who also lives with boyfriend Aiden, 22, says Peaks and Plains staff were due to come and fix the issue on Friday, April 8.

But then cancelled and told her that they do not fix cat flaps.

She says other problems since she moved include a broken shed that the handle snapped off two years ago, leaving tools inside that now cannot be reached.

And Callie has also complained that neither the kitchen nor the bathroom has ever had a working extractor fan - meaning the latter is full of mould.

She estimates she has called the housing association 20 times but only had the odd visit and none that have fixed any of her problems.

Callie, who normally works as a care assistant but is on maternity leave, said: “There are pretty simple things to fix but it is taking a long time, it’s dreadful.”

A Peaks and Plains spokesman said: “Ms Rooney submitted her complaint to us on Friday, April 8.

“We already had an appointment booked to deal with the extractor fan. On Tuesday, April 12, an inspector visited her home to talk about any other outstanding issues that might need our attention.”
