Healthier to walk to work? ... buzz off!

-

POLITICIANS of all persuasions love buzzwords, elongated job titles and meaningless phrases.

I was speaking to a Cheshire East councillor recently and asked if he had a business card.

He did not which I found rather odd until he told me his job title… you couldn’t fit it on a business card.

He would need patio doors to have it on his office door.

Politicians love self-aggrandising guage believing vates their status.

I was thinking about this when I read CEC are to receive £743K from central government for their Active Travel Scheme.

Chances are you don’t have a clue what that is so I will clarify.

Active Travel is walking and cycling. this lanit ele

Basically, CEC want you to walk or cycle to wherever you go and leave your car at home.

Now, if you have tried that already you will be aware that by far the greatest number of lethal potholes are nearest the kerb, exactly where cyclists ride.

If you haven’t tried cycling on local roads and feel compelled to do so take out a fully comprehensive insurance policy, preferably one that covers reconstructive surgery.

As for walking to work/ school there are probably enough toxins in the air at peak times to poison the entire Russian army.

Huge queues of standing traffic crawl along belching out emissions like Chernobyl yet there appears no urgency whatsoever to carry out necessary roadworks.

Joined up thinking it certainly is not.

Meanwhile Cheshire East want to sell off the land they own to facilitate the building of 930 houses on Dane’s Moss.

That probably means another 2,000 extra cars spewing out CO2.

(Please don’t say electric cars are the answer. Anyone who watched the TV documentary on how the cobalt - used in the batteries - is ripped from beneath the earth by child labour know it is not)

For anyone who does not already know Dane’s Moss is a collection of peat bogs that have been soaking up huge amounts of carbon for hundreds of years.

Once disturbed they release their carbon back into the atmosphere.

The last people to want this to happen would be Cheshire East whose avowed aim is saving the planet but not only does the current leadership of CEC want to facilitate this development it they intend to sell their own land to make it happen.

Tell me this… how many cycle lanes and children walking to school will it take to repair the massive damage done to this ancient eco-system?
