Skills to the fore for MBBC at West Wythy

- BOXING KEVIN BRADBURY

MACCLESFIELD Boys Boxing Club members travelled to the West Wythenshawe club for the first time and what an absolutely brilliant little gym, based at the Royal Oak community centre and ideal for a skills show.

First up for MBBC was Tommy Palmer, taking part in his fifth skills contest and taking on Danny Clough from Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy, this being his fourth skills.

It proved a cracking little contest, both kids struggled in the first round restricted to just straight jabs.

Come the second they where allowed lefts and rights or lead and backhands and this allowed them to flow a bit better, entertaining the crowds.

The third round saw both boxers show some brilliant skills moving forward as well as on the backfoot, so both kids’ hands were raised and another valuable lesson learnt.

Next up was our little southpaw prospect Tommy Lee Hampton who is coming into his own. His opponent, also from Jimmy Egan’s Academy, was Keoyn McCann who was slightly taller and heavier.

The first round for these kids was even worse with one being orthodox and the other southpaw – if you know the game you will understand why.

Round two enabled them to settle a bit better as they got their shots off,

Tommy moving in and out and Keoyn using his height and reach well.

Round three was a tear up, both boxers going for it and again putting on a fantastic display for those watching, well done both boxers.

The third bout for us was Mia King against Milly McCann from Barton ABC.

This was to be their third encounter and it was mutually agreed that this time restrictions would be lifted and they could have an open spar – as close to a real bout as it gets.

They didn’t disappoint – these girls gave the crowd a real battle from the start.

Previously it had been hard to control them both so it was much easier this time for the referee to deal with as she let them off the leash.

Wow, this contest went back and to with both girls taking some big shots and giving out shots, again southpaw v orthodox so both girls leading with their backhands then hooks catching accurately and on target.

What a belter, no winner and no loser as they took the applause from those watching on. Both girls are warrior princesses that never disappoint, well done to both of them.

Well done also to West Wythenshawe for hosting a brilliant skills show on a lazy Sunday afternoon, cracking!
