Max a clear winner in spite of split decision

- BOXING KEVIN BRADBURY

FUSION nightclub holds shows for clubs from Liverpool on a regular basis – so much so it’s seems like Macclesfield Boys Boxing Club are there every couple of weeks!

I have to say we are always apprehensive every time as the northwest region sometimes falls party to the politics of boxing, so you can’t leave any results to chance.

So originally having two out, Liam Barnes was pulled a couple days before the show due to his opponent not being ready or moving gym.

It was down to Max Winder to do the business. Weigh in completed and the bouts list up, we were on bout number 7 of 16 so bit of a wait but all part of the show.

So as they came together in round one they looked similar in size and stature – it looked to be a good match up.

Max’s opponent was from the host club, Long Lane, William McKevitt.

Both these kids went straight to work but Max was on form and throwing shots at will, all scoring shots and was clearly on top throughout the first, showing great boxing ability.

Will tried his best to get in the bout but I have to say he was struggling.

Round two and again Max was scoring the better shots, in control with phased attacks in and out scoring every time. Will was a strong lad and soaked up the shots – they didn’t really give him any problems but they were fast and plentiful.

Round two in the bag as well, round three was a little more scrappy. Max was tiring and Will had obviously been told he was losing and a stoppage would be the only way to win by his coaches.

He came out strong but even then he could not hit

Max, who was catching him cleanly and at one point threw a beautiful left and right on the button, catching hard and rocking Will’s head back for me it should have been a count but the ref let it go.

By then the third was in the bag as well, so as we waited for the decisions the compere announced a split decisions (our hearts dropped, not another robbery?) in favour of the blue corner, Max Winder from Macclesfield Boys Boxing Club.... and breathe, unfortunately it happens so often.

You’re always apprehensive – the performance was that good we had to get the win although whoever scored it a split shouldn’t be judging!

Big shout out to Sean White who is on a solid win streak over in Liverpool long May it continue.
