- YASMIN AL-NAJAR

ATEENAGE indie punk rock band has released its first single of 2022 to the delight of their large following in the USA.

Macclesfield fivepiece group Between Thorns launched their new single, Nuisance, at The Swan with Two Necks, on Chestergate.

Last month the band’s monthly streams on Spotify fluctuated between 25,000 and 35,000, and they have 30,000 people listening to their music every month on the platform alone.

Lead singer and songwriter, Lilly Hill, said: “It is very exciting to know that many people listen to our music.

“We started the band with no expectations of what would happen then all of a sudden we had a large following.

“I don’t think it has really sunk in yet and it is overwhelming so many people liked it and added it to their playlists, it’s crazy.

“I think people like the fact that we are a relatable band of normal people writing about everyday things and we cover very relatable themes.”

The three minute single, which was released on May 6, was written halfway through 2020 against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter protests and the women’s rights movement.

Lilly, 19, said: “I was very inspired by all of that and the song is about not wanting to be quiet about things.

“All the issues raised were important and we should treat people as equals.

“We felt it was important to release this song as a single because of the strong message it holds.”

The singer performs with her 17-year-old bandmates Jack Heeds (bassist), Josh Connor (lead electric guitarist) and Ruairi McLean (drummer) who formed their band four years ago, and then 18-yearold Rosie Bristow (rhythm guitarist) joined in 2020.

According to Spotify, their audience are predominantly teenage girls from America including Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas and Atlanta. London also made it to the top location for listeners.

They will be performing at MaccPride on Saturday, July 9.

Lilly, who will be studying drama at University of Winchester this September, said: “I am really excited to do MaccPride which has been postponed for about three years so it will be fun.”

Between Thorn’s music can be found on all streaming platforms including Spotify.
