Pharmacy leads way in offer of MMR jabs

- ALEX SCAPENS

AMACCLESFIELD pharmacy has become among the first in the country to offer the MMR vaccine to children.

Andrew’s Pharmacy, on Kennedy Avenue, is taking part in an NHS pilot scheme for the measles, mumps and rubella jab.

Under the trial, which could be rolled out across England if successful, youngsters aged five to 11 who have previously missed doses can get vaccinated.

Andrew’s is one of seven pharmacies in Cheshire to take part in the trial, which involves 28 in total.

Tricia Spedding, from NHS England – North West, said: “Measles is a highly infectious illness – complications can be life changing with dangers including blindness, deafness and swelling of the brain.

“Children who have not yet had both doses of the MMR vaccination are at risk of catching this very serious but completely preventable disease. By offering the MMR vaccine in pharmacies to children who missed one or both doses, we are hoping to make it easier and more convenient for parents to get their children protected.”

The vaccine’s first does is usually given to children aged one followed by a second one at around three years four months.

Uptake of both doses is 85.2 per cent in the north west – lower than the World Health Organisation target of 95 per cent.

Under the pilot parents of children aged five to 11 who are overdue one or both doses can walk in to the pharmacy, with no appointment needed, although there may be a short wait if the pharmacist is busy.

GP practices will also be able to refer patients for the MMR vaccination.

Michael Ball, a pharmacist taking part in the pilot, said: “The role of community pharmacists is rapidly evolving in response to changes in healthcare delivery, technology, and patient needs.

“Pharmacists are increasingly recognised as integral members of the healthcare team, with expanded clinical responsibilities and a greater focus on patientcentred care and public health initiatives.”
