Enjoying the high life at Peak View Tea Rooms

- BY MILO CLAY

A TEA room which sits high in the Peak District National Park boasts some of the best views in the UK.

The Peak View Tea Rooms is based on the Buxton Road, just outside Macclesfield and Buxton, and overlooks the Cheshire plain.

Visitors lucky enough to call here on a clear day can reportedly see Mount Snowdon – around 100 miles away in North Wales.

The self-proclaimed ‘highest tea room in England’ sits a whopping 1,670 feet above sea level. And its astounding views across the Peaks do not disappoint.

The original tea room was built in 1956 and named The Moorland Cafe, then it was renamed Dish and Spoon and in the 1980s it was bought under new ownership and called the Shining Tor restaurant. Now under the name of The Peak View Tea Rooms, it’s always been a place for people to enjoy food with stunning scenery.

Taken over by Gail and Philip Heath in 2007, the couple have kept many of its original features, ranging from the original beams, firestone to the original Traser tiles from the 1950s.

Traversing through the hills up the Cat and Fiddle, the views are breathtaking. As soon as you park up outside the Peak View Tea Rooms, you’re hit by an astounding view across the

Cheshire plain.

The tea room sticks to the traditional sense of a cafe, with classic antiques decorating the wall as well as various pictures of the tea room from years gone by.

Despite visiting during the week on a Thursday afternoon, the place was brimming with customers.

Nearly every table was full and a few were reserved. Luckily, there was one small table available for me to sit down and enjoy some food.

My lunch was great, I went for a tomato, pesto and mozzarella panini with chips.

One of the best features of the tea room has to be the traditional, open-hatch kitchen. The feature gives the Peak View Tea Rooms that classic cafe smell as you walk in. But it also gives customers an insight into what is a very clean kitchen.

It also offers a range of beers and wines to go with your food. With a standard and a specials menu, which changes daily, it’s also ideal for special events like Mother’s and Father’s Days, or a birthday party.

After a pleasant visit to the Peak View Tea Rooms, I look forward to visiting again when the weather is warmer, to enjoy the outdoor seating area and the spectacular views to the full.
