By Vic Barlow A troubled dog needs lots of patience, understanding and help from the owners

-

IWENT to Stoke-on-Trent yesterday to work with a retriever named Zac that was causing a lot of concern from neighbours due to his aggressive behaviour. He had already ‘nipped’ a couple of them and could not got go outside without wearing a muzzle.

I was a bit too casual about the dog I was about to meet as he charged me before I made it through the door.

I returned to the car for my old tennis racquet to form a barrier between us.

This was full-on aggression and I had no doubt he would attack given the opportunity.

I asked his owners to remain totally silent. It is really important with these dogs not to make eye contact, which is a formal challenge in the dog world.

I warded off each lunge by placing the tennis racquet between us and moving very slowly and quietly.

As he settled down I offered him a couple of treats which he munched whilst staring directly at me. Please do not try this yourself as the wrong move at the wrong time could send you to A&E.

Over the next 45 minutes I was able to get a simple slip lead over him and walk him (silently) around a nearby field.

As he began to relax I asked a little more from him and he seemed to like the challenge and the praise that went with it.

Towards the end of the session he was walking happily alongside me and my Lab Del. I took off his muzzle slowly and he trotted along with Del perfectly happy.

This is not the end but the beginning of a long rehabilitation process that will demand as much from Zac’s family as it will from Zac.

The owners were exceedingly grateful but have even more to learn than their dog.

Given commitment and perseverance Zac can become a good citizen, able to walk the hills and fields without fear or worry BUT it’s all down to his owners.

They are on a long journey with many twists and turns and will need to attend class so that they learn alongside their dog.

Troubled dogs do not need fuss and petting, they need help to understand the world around them.

Rehabilitating a troubled dog is enormously satisfying.
