Golf club’s charity drive gifts £20k to lifesavers

-

GOLFERS at Mere Golf Club have donated £20,000 to East Cheshire NHS Charity, following life-saving care given to one of its members.

Wayne Loughlin was diagnosed with bowel cancer in March 2019, and following a lifesaving operation and subsequent treatment at

Macclesfield Hospital, has been given the ‘all clear’ five years later.

Following the care received within the Colorectal Unit, Wayne’s wife, Jenny, who was appointed the Lady Captain of The Mere

Golf Resort in January 2023, decided she wanted to give back by supporting the hospital’s charity through a range of fundraising activities at the golf club over a 12-month period.

Jenny said: “In March 2019 we got the awful news my husband

Wayne had bowel cancer which came as a complete shock as the only symptom he had was slight constipation.

“We were absolutely devastated and after a consultation with Dr Chris Smart, his surgeon at Macclesfield Hospital, it was decided an operation was necessary.

“Dr Smart told us if he hadn’t operated on him on that day, he wouldn’t have been with us 24 hours later.

“The operation was a success and after five years Wayne has been given the all clear and released from the care of the Colorectal Unit at Macclesfield Hospital we feel nothing but gratitude!”

Over the course of the year, with the support of the Mere Golf team and its lovely members, they raised an amazing £11,000 through raffles, a charity golf day, a sponsored hole in one, and a fabulous lunch held by a great friend of Jenny and Wayne, at Statham Lodge, from which there was a generous donation of £5,000.

Wayne, who recently retired decided he would also donate an incredible £9,000 to make the total raised £20,000.

Jenny and Wayne recently met with Ged Murphy, Chief Executive at East Cheshire NHS Trust, to present the donation and discuss how the money would be spent.

Ged said: “We are extremely grateful for the generous donation made by Jenny, Wayne and the members at Mere Golf Club.

“It is great news to hear Wayne has been given the ‘all clear’.

“The money will make a significant difference and ensure we continue to provide the very best care and treatment to our patients.”
