Marlow lack purpose in season’s first loss
Marlow’s men’s 1st team lost for the first time this season after OMT scored late to claim a surprise 2-1 victory at Pound Lane.
The Reds got off to a flyer when Chris Sewell finished off a sublime counterattack to give the hosts a fourth minute lead.
However, the game was an even one and Marlow lacked purpose in their play, despite seeing plenty of the ball.
OMT had their fair share of circle entries and they deservedly grabbed a leveller on the stroke of half-time when the ball was turned home from a corner.
Both teams had chances to score in the second half but, crucially, it was OMT who managed to convert from another corner with just minutes left on the clock.
Despite the result Marlow remain top of the league but will now have to wait until early in the New Year to put right this defeat. With so many matches being cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions, a clear run of fixtures will be needed to complete the season on schedule.
Despite the restrictions Marlow’s men’s 2nd team were also in action, losing 4-2 at league leaders Milton Keynes 2nds.
Marlow started brightly and had the lion’s share of possession in the early stages; however, MK were resolute and eased into the game as the half wore on.
Ivor Crampsie made some impressive saves for Marlow in his first appearance for the and he ensured the teams went off level at the break.
MK returned with renewed vigour after the interval and a volley of short corners led to them scoring twice in quick succession.
Green cards hampered Marlow’s response and it was not until MK had scored a third that they mustered a response.
Louis Cadinouche beat his man to deliver a cross which Dan Field deflected past the keeper, but MK quickly restored their advantage to deflate any hope of a comeback. Field got his second of the game with a penalty stroke, but the game was effectively over by that stage.
The 6ths were beaten 4-0 away by Maidenhead’s 4th team and the only other side to play were the Strollers, who beat BA 4-0 at home.
Emily Gillespie finished off a great team move to earn Marlow Ladies 2nds a 1-0 win over Aylesbury 1sts at home.
The hosts started slowly but gradually settled to their task and, after initially struggling to make headway in the attacking third,
Gillespie’s finish on the counter gave them a lead to hold onto.
In midfield Sophie Be, Helenm Windsor and Jarvey turned the ball repeatedly for the home side while their improved defensive shape and discipline ensured Aylesbury struggled to carve out scoring opportunities. They conceded a couple of short corners, but Barnes was able to keep a clean sheet taking Marlow into the New Year on top of their league.
Only one other game was played with Marlow’s 5ths losing 4-3 at home to Maidenhead 4ths.
