BURNHAM: A primary school in Burnham is celebrating 25 years of devoted service from a lollipop lady.

Anne Ruffle, who is also a cleaner and midday supervisor at Lent Rise School, has been given a long service award by Buckinghamshire Council and headteacher Jill Watson to mark the milestone.

Anne, who lives in Burnham, started working at the school in 1996 and is a popular part of ‘People who help us’, an annual week in which she spends time with pupils in early years, teaching them road safety and her experience of being a crossing patroller.

Headteacher Jill Watson, said: “Anne is a community hero who has spent the last 25 years supporting Lent Rise School and keeping our children safe.

“She is a much- loved member of the school and welcomes the children and parents every day, with a smile, come rain or shine.

“Even during lockdown she has been in school supporting our key worker and vulnerable children.”

Plans which form part of a project to replace a community hall with homes and temporary road closures are among the public notices featured in the Advertiser this week. Here are some of the proposals this week:

Planning

One of four applications which form a project to build homes and car parking spaces on an estate in Maidenhead features in this week’s public notices.

The refurbishment of garages and creation of parking spaces in Abingdon Walk are part of a wider project planned for the area.

A planning application has also been put forward to demolish the community hall in Radcot Close with a view to building homes and car parking on the estate.

Other applications focus on sites with ‘dilapidated’ garages which would be removed and replaced with three-bedroom dwellings and 34 new car parking spaces.

Eight homes would be built as part of the project.

The four proposals cover areas Radcot Close, Shifford Crescent, Mapledurham Walk and Abingdon Walk.

The The West End Fishery, a specimen carp fishery in

Waltham St Lawrence, is looking to replace its lodge next to West End Lake.

The new lodge would add an extra 15 square metres to the existing 30sqm site.

Property developer Countryside is looking to install a larger roof terrace to the redundant roof space adjacent to a plot in the York Road redevelopment area.

The roof terrace is to increase the outdoor space available to the eventual tenants inside the 229 homes being built.

Road closures

There will be several road closures this coming week.

Oldfield Road will close from Bridge Road to Kingsquarter

between 8pm to 6am from Monday until next Thursday, due to highway works.

Harrow Lane will be closed from Cookham Road to Harrow Close from 8am on Monday until 6pm on Sunday while a new gas connection is installed.

Dungrovehill Lane in Bisham will be closed for its entire length from 9am to 3pm next Thursday due to roadworks.

Cherry Garden Lane will be closed from its junction with Breadcroft Lane every day from 8am to 6pm from Thursday, February 25 until Tuesday, March 16, for fibre broadband works.

A Marlow charity spearheaded by celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has reached a significant milestone by delivering 100,000 meals to frontline staff and vulnerable people during the pandemic.

Meals from Marlow was developed during the first COVID-19 lockdown to supply hot meals to NHS staff and vulnerable people in the town and surrounding areas.

It quickly took off and raised more than £180,000, with 75,000 dishes given out by July.

Due to its success, Meals from Marlow also became a permanent charity transforming it from a lockdown initiative into an all-year round campaign.

Kerridge donated a production kitchen to produce food

while professional chefs, pub staff and volunteers gave time to make, package and deliver meals.

The 100,000th meal was delivered to High Wycombe Hospital on Friday to practitioner Kym Northeast.

Kerridge said that Kym will be offered a VIP package at the next Pub in the Park event in Marlow, scheduled to take place later this year owing to virus restrictions.

“While 100,000 meals is beyond all that we expected to achieve, we haven’t finished yet, and will continue to support those in need in our community and our amazing NHS staff going forward,” Kerridge wrote on Instagram at the weekend.

“Here’s to the next 100,000.” The Meals From Marlow initiative has also nominated for the innovator category at the 2021 GQ Magazine Food and Drink Awards.

Andy Agar, who helped spearhead the initiative with Kerridge, added the team are delivering about 1,200 meals a week – which is more than in the first lockdown.

He says that deliveries and the groups being assisted have changed as the pandemic carried on, with several hospitals supported during the first lockdown, before there was more of an emphasis on vulnerable people and charities

during the summer when infections reduced.

Now in the third peak, the charity is again supporting hospitals in Bucks with meal deliveries.

“From a personal point of view, it has been great to engage with so many different people,” Andy said.

“I have met people that I would never have come across previously.

“Food has actually been able to increase the contact that some people have had, just because they are seeing a

friendly face a couple of times a week.

He added: “Marlow is a very generous place, and you realise that there are so many decent people who will go above and beyond.

“When you go to the hospital and you see staff who are doing incredibly long shifts and have been doing it pretty much non-stop for a year, you realise that while you are making a little difference, they are the guys doing the heavy lifting, and they are doing it with a smile.”
