Taye produces superb display between sticks

Taye Ashby-Hammond typified Maidenhead United’s desire not to be beaten on the night of their 150th anniversary, making a string of crucial saves in the goalless draw with the Hatters.

The club was marking the 150th anniversary of its first ever match at York Road, and AshbyHammond produced a superb display between the sticks as part of an excellent rear-guard display.

After the game AshbyHammond praised the Magpies’ improved display in the second half but was also quick to point out their short comings in a first half which saw them manage just one shot on target.

He was forced into several saves, including a brilliant outstretched palm to turn away John Rooney’s last-gasp strike which seemed destined for the back of the net.

“We came in at half time and we all knew we needed to work a bit harder off the ball,” he said.

“They (Stockport) had a lot of time to go around the top of our half and retain possession. So, we got tight to them, forced them into a few misplaced passes, and we were able to counter on those. I think the biggest thing was our change in workrate.

“In the first half, Stockport were very good on the ball and moved it quick, so we had to decide very early to sit in.

“We did well to defend our box and snuff out their crosses and attempts early.

“After the break, I believe they didn’t really get much of a look until the end when there was couple of chances. I think I did well to save those and deny them an opportunity to win the game at the end.”

On Maidenhead’s next match, away to Bromley on Saturday, Ashby-Hammond added: “They’re a big side and I think we drew when we played them last. I think we have a great chance to win now. We’ll just have to see the game out when it comes, and I believe we’ll be able to win there.”
