Stern words from the boss after poor first-half show

-

Maidenhead United assistant manager Ryan Peters was satisfied with his side’s redemption against Bromley but says he, and boss Alan Devonshire, were frustrated by their players’ lack of impetus in the first half.

Having been 2-0 down at halftime and destined for defeat, the Magpies needed to be fired up at the break by the stern words of Devonshire with the boss unsatisfied with his side’s first half showing.

The team talk did pay dividends, however, and Maidenhead managed to salvage a point through Ryan Upward and Jerry Wiltshire with the latter scoring the equaliser in the 90th minute.

“The first half was not very good at all,” said Peters.

“It was a combination of us not adjusting to the wind and just an overall poor performance. Like a few of the games we have played so far, the gaffer got into them at half time and they came up with a bit more of an impetus.

“He let the boys know how we weren’t at our usual level. Once you’re at that, there’s no one to fear in this league. Fortunately, we went out in the second half and showed just how good we can be, remembering what Bromley did to us at home.

“Once we got going, they were never going to stop us.”

Had fans been allowed to attend the game, most would have questioned Devonshire’s decision to replace Danilo Orsi-Dadomo with Wiltshire in the game’s closing stages with the scoreline 2-1.

But it was ultimately a masterstroke from the Magpies manager with the substitution netting the final goal of the game and completing Maidenhead’s comeback.

Speaking on the substitution, Peters said: “That was the gaffer’s decision and I can’t take any credit for that.

“Taking off a striker and bringing on a defender, most would argue, ‘what on Earth is that?’. But, the gaffer knew what he was doing. He knew we had the wide men that would be able to service [him].

“It was just about Jerry popping up in the right position to put it in the net. Five minutes more and I imagine we would have gone to get a winner.”
