Get set for next-gen broadband
Maidenhead: Network upgrades on way as CityFibre chooses town for £14million gigabit investment
Homes and businesses in Maidenhead are set to gain access to next-generation broadband as part of a £14million investment by CityFibre.
The telecoms infrastructure company is planning to upgrade the town’s networks with gigabit-capable full fibre connectivity which could provide near limitless bandwidth.
Full fibre networks use 100 per cent fibre optic cables, rather than copper-based fibre broadband services, and give users download speeds of up to 1,000 megabytes per second.
VolkerSmart Technologies is delivering the construction programme, with Kidwells Park chosen as the location for the first build site in Maidenhead.
The rollout is expected to be completed by 2024 but services will go live as full
fibre infrastructure is installed in each part of the town.
CityFibre said it will notify residents by email if any work is due to take place outside their homes.
Stacey King, CityFibre’s City Manager for the Thames Valley, said: “I’m immensely excited that work is ready to begin in Bracknell and Maidenhead, as well as proud to see the progress that is being made across the region.
“This is the start of an exciting new chapter for the Thames Valley as it gets ready to thrive in the digital age.
“It’s important to remember that any short-term disruption will pay off tremendously in the long-term - once the network’s built, it will serve the community’s connectivity needs for decades to come.”
Councillor Andrew Johnson, leader of the Royal Borough, described the project as a ‘once-in-a-generation upgrade’ which will benefit residents, businesses and services.
He added: “CityFibre’s investment in Maidenhead and the wider region is crucial at a time when connectivity has never been so important.”
