Terras’ smash and grab raid was ‘upsetting’

-

Maidenhead United assistant boss Ryan Peters said it was upsetting to come so close to victory against Weymouth on Friday, only to have a positive result ripped from their clutches in the dying embers of the game.

United had looked on course for all three points when Sam Barratt netted his 10th league goal of the season direct from a corner kick five minutes into the second half. But Manny Parry’s harsh dismissal on the hour mark for a strong challenge on Pierre Fonkeu changed the course of the game and led to the previously comfortable Magpies back line coming under increasing pressure in the closing stages.

Their defence was breached in the 86th minute when Sean Shields’ cross evaded everyone and flew into the top corner of Taye Ashby-Hammond’s net.

Then, in the sixth minute of injury time Andrew Dallas was hauled down by Alan Massey and referee Tom Bishop pointed to the penalty spot.

Dallas picked himself up to convert from 12 yards and give the

Terras their second victory over the Magpies in league and cup football this season. Earlier in the season an understrength Weymouth side knocked Maidenhead out of the FA Trophy with a 3-2 victory.

Peters admitted Friday’s defeat was especially tough to take given the circumstances.

“Yeah, it is upsetting,” he said after the final whistle. “To get that close, for them to get the equaliser is hard to take but for them to go on and win it with 10 seconds left, or 10 seconds over should I say, is difficult.

“But we can’t afford to dwell on these things. There are things that we’re looking to do, and we want to be looking up rather than down. It’s done and we move on.

“We’ve missed Sammy. He’s got 10 goals for us now. We need goals and we’ve missed Sammy for some spells. But he’s back now and fingers crossed he’s going to give us the impetus to go on and win more games than we lose.”

James Comley also returned to the fold for the Magpies having missed the home defeat to Altrincham the previous weekend after being on international duty with Montserrat. He and Rohan Ince both made the long flight back from the Caribbean in the days before Friday’s game but Ince wasn’t available through injury.
