Kelly’s glad to be back on scoresheet but Magpies must look to improve

-

Maidenhead United striker Josh Kelly said it felt good to get back on the scoresheet after finding the net in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Farnborough in pre-season.

The Magpies were in friendly action twice last week, scoring a glut of goals in a comprehensive 6-0 win over Staines Town before finding life a little less comfortable in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with The Yellows.

Speaking after his left-footed effort was parried into the net to draw Alan Devonshire’s side level in the second half, Kelly said it was good to be scoring again and getting sharper, however, he acknowledged there’s plenty of hard work that still needs to be put in to ensure the Magpies are ready for the start of the season.

They kick off their National League campaign at FC Halifax Town on Saturday, August 21.

“It’s good to be back on it,” he said. “It’s been a while and last season wasn’t great in terms of injuries. But this is a good place to start and hopefully there’s more to come.”

Injuries hampered Kelly’s progress last season and he spent far more time on the sidelines than on the pitch for United.

However, he returned to the side for the final few games of last season and scored on the final day in a 4-1 win over Boreham Wood.

“Pre-season has been really good so far. I feel really sharp,” he added.

“A lot sharper than I did before. Obviously, I’ve just got to keep training hard, putting in the work and hopefully it will pay off by the time the season comes. Obviously, we need a couple more games for everyone to come together, but yeah, it’s good.

“There are always targets, but I just need to try and take each game as it comes, do as well as I can, try and score as many as I can to help the team out. But it’s just about working hard and getting those points really.”
