Maidenhead United FC: United boss angered by sloppy first half against Torquay
Reflecting on a rotten first half against Torquay United, Alan Devonshire said he will not hesitate in bringing more defenders to the club if Maidenhead United’s existing backline don’t show an improvement against Stockport County.
The Magpies trailed 4-0 to the Gulls at half-time on Saturday afternoon, with each one of the visitors’ goals arriving from inexcusable errors in defence according to Devonshire.
They did steady the ship after the interval as they fought back to 4-3 with skipper and centre-back Alan Massey scoring one of Maidenhead’s three goal haul.
However, the Magpies boss affirmed that his men shouldn’t have needed to go behind in the clash to put in a resolute defensive and attacking showing.
“I’m very disappointed,” he said. “I’m very disappointed with the first half display.
“You cannot defend like that and give goals like that away. You just can’t at this level.
Well, to be fair, you can’t do that at any level not even Sunday morning.
“If I have to get other players in, I will get other players in. We’ve got Stockport County next, and we need to be ready for that.”
Devonshire added: “There are no excuses. It ain’t good enough. The defending without a doubt let us down today.
“The goals we did score just papered over the cracks. We’ve got to work on defending properly.
“I was hoping we’d get back just for them [the players]. At the end of the day, it didn’t happen, and it was far too much to pull four goals back.”
