Magpies ‘could have nicked a point or maybe three’
Playing in front of nearly 6,000 fans was a great experience for Maidenhead United’s loan signing Sam Beckwith, but the young defender left Meadow
Lane feeling disappointed the Magpies hadn’t ‘nicked one, or maybe even three points’.
Maidenhead matched highflying Notts County for the most part, particularly in the first half when they carved out a host of presentable opportunities.
However, a momentary lapse at the start of the second half gave Alex Lacey the chance to poke Notts County in front and the Magpies weren’t able to stretch their hosts and create the same kind of openings in the second half.
The scoreline could have been even harsher on the Magpies, had goalkeeper Rhys Lovett not pulled off a brilliant penalty save to deny Cal Roberts’ midway through the second half.
With Sam Barratt back in the Magpies line-up after some weeks on the sidelines through injury, United looked bright and inventive in the opening 20 minutes creating numerous chances, but they failed to test County keeper Slocombe.
Beckwith, currently on loan from Luton Town, came close himself after exchanging passes with Kane Ferdinand, however, he wasn’t able to force the ball home.
Speaking with Maidenhead’s media officer, Grace Scott, afterwards, Beckwith said: “For myself personally it’s a great experience to come here. “There were a lot of fans here and they’re all against you.
“There are a lot of positives to take, both individually and as a team, however, we didn’t get any points so it’s disappointing when you look at it like that.
“I felt we could have nicked a point, or maybe even three.
“Thank you to all of the fans for coming today. Even for my debut at Weymouth, the amount of people that travelled, it’s fantastic to see.”
The result leaves the Magpies in 16th place ahead of next weekend’s home game with third placed Grimsby Town. Another tricky fixture on paper, but Beckwith is keen for the Magpies to put an end to their losing run as soon as they can.
“The boys and the coaching staff are so welcoming. They’ve all been brilliant and hopefully we can get some results for all the fans. We’ll come back in Monday, we’ll work hard on bits we could have done better and it’s down to us to put things right. “Hopefully, next week against Grimsby, we can put it right.”
