Police are investigating reports of racist abuse during Notts County’s game with Maidenhead United at the weekend.

County confirmed that they’d received a report of racist abuse by a fan during the match at Meadow Lane on Saturday, which Maidenhead lost 1-0.

County have said they’re working in full cooperation with the police.

In a statement Notts County said: “The club can confirm that on Monday (September 21) it received a report of alleged racist abuse by a spectator at Saturday's home match against Maidenhead United.

"Upon receipt of this report, the club immediately sought further detail from the complainant before informing the police, who are now investigating with the club's full cooperation.

"The club received no reports of any racist abuse on matchday and has procedures in place to immediately investigate such allegations in line with its zero-tolerance approach to discrimination.

Constable John Albanese, of Nottinghamshire Police’s dedicated football unit, added: “Nottinghamshire Police takes hate crime reports extremely seriously.

“We have received a report of an alleged incident of racist abuse at the Notts County match on Saturday (18 September 2021).

“We are investigating the incident and are still in the early stages of our enquires.

“We would like to urge anyone who has any information about the matter to contact us on 101.”

Maidenhead’s assistant manager Ryan Peters added that he wasn’t aware of the incident or the police investigation.

“To be honest, this is the first I’ve heard of it,” he said.

“I had no idea this had happened, and from training on Monday and Tuesday I can only assume that none of the players or the gaffer (Alan Devonshire) have heard of this either.”
