White hammers home Marlow’s advantage

- Marlow Hockey Club

Marlow men’s 1st team continued their impressive early season form with an 8-0 win over Reading 2nds.

Callum White netted for of the goals, including a first half hattrick, while Leo Pennant (two) and Chris Sewell (two) completed a thoroughly dominant first half showing. Reading retreated in the second half and Marlow spurned several chances, but White added his fourth from close range to take his tally to the season to 10 goals from three matches, and the team’s tally to 24 with only two goals conceded.

The men’s 2nds were left disappointed after a late deflection gave Sonning 2nds the chance to wrap up a 2-1 home win. George Atkins had levelled the scores in the second half but Sonning netted their winner from a short corner which was deflected in at the back post.

Marlow Ladies 1sts welcomed a strong Oxford Hawks 2nds to Pound Lane and the visitors withstood a strong second half fightback to claim a narrow 4-3 win. Kerri Smith opened the scoring for Marlow after only four minutes, but the Hawks were clinical on the counter attack and raced into a 3-1 half-time lead. An early second half goal from Hannah Dring brought Marlow back into contention but the Hawks quickly restored their two-goal cushion. Smith scored again, with a well-directed strike through the keeper’s legs, but try as they might they weren’t able to find an equaliser.

Other results saw the men’s 3rds draw 2-2 with Sonning 3rds away, the 4ths lose 6-1 at Amersham & Chalfont 3rds and the 5ths beat Bicester 2nds 4-2.

On the women’s sides the 2nds defeated Oxford 3rds 4-0 away from home and the 3rds beat Sonning 2nds 2-1 and the 4ths lost 6-2 away at Oxford University 3rds.
