Maids chalk up ‘unbelievable’ first victory

Maidenhead men’s 1st team chalked up their first win of the season in emphatic style on Saturday with a 7-4 victory over Winchester at Altwood School.

Captain Phil Cowell, who netted one of the side’s seven goals, could scarcely believe how well Maids performed against a Winchester side that’s well established in

South Central Premier Division 1.

The club have been promoted into the division this season and got off to a rocky start, losing 6-1 at home to Staines on the opening day before recovering to draw 1-1 with Slough in a match Maids really should have won.

But they found their teeth in the final third on Saturday lunchtime, scoring six times in the opening period to lead 6-1 at the interval. James Luff, who played well throughout, grabbed a couple of goals, while Dave Harding, James Duke and Alex Land also got their names on the scoresheet.

They were set to travel to Banbury this weekend, but both sides have agreed to postpone the game with many of the Maids team set to attend Cowell’s wedding this weekend.

“It was an unbelievable performance,” said Cowell.

“A similar performance to the Slough game in terms of how we played, but we just clicked up front. We went in 6-1 at halftime, took all our chances and our short corner routine worked really well.

“It goes to show what we can do when we have our full squad available. We just clicked and blew them away in the first half. I had confidence in us but to get seven was unbelievable.

“It’s just a shame that we shipped some goals at the end.

“We had a 10-minute sin bin and we conceded three goals in that time which makes the scoreline 7-4 and flattered them a little bit.

“If we can keep getting the majority of our squad out it’s hopeful for the season and we’ll be looking to finish in the top half at least.”

W Maidenhead Ladies 1sts sit rock bottom of South Central Women’s Premier Division 1 after narrowly losing 2-1 at Sonning.

Eddie Westacott’s team have picked up one home and two away defeats in this year’s campaign.

They welcome Reading to home turf this Saturday, a side that sit in second place in the table.
