Girls perform creditably well with hectic schedule

Maidenhead Hockey Club: Maidenhead's u14s finish third and fourth in Plate tournament

-

A u14s girls’ team from Maidenhead Hockey Club took part in a national indoor tournament in Derby last week and performed creditably well with a hectic schedule.

Due to player shortages on the day of the event, Maidenhead took a team of only eight players to the Derby Arena and played in both of the club’s assigned team slots.

Despite playing twice as many matches as the other clubs they secured third and fourth place.

In the first round of matches, Maidenhead qualified for the Plate Competition after winning two of their matches and drawing two.

In the Plate they managed one win, two draws and three losses, placing them in third and fourth position in the league.

The Plate League was won by UK Lions Hockey, an invitational touring side while the overall championship was won by Knole Park.

Enthused by the experience the team is now keen to take part in the next Indoor Hockey UK Championships, due to take place at the Copper Box in London. The club are keen to get more players involved and are calling on members, both old and new, to sign up and take part.

David Joshua, director of hockey said: “The girls were amazing given that they have never played indoor hockey together before.

“We saw their skills develop throughout the tournament and the smiles got bigger and bigger. I am really proud of the team.”

Steve Hills, head of colts, added: “Given the girls played twice the games of anyone else and it was the first time on an indoor court for the team, this really was an exceptional performance. We hope this is just the beginning of a fantastic extension to what we offer the young people of Maidenhead.”

Maidenhead will be commencing a full indoor hockey programme from September 2022, open to both new and existing members. No experience is required as full coaching will be provided.

The club is also keen to welcome new players into the fold.

Those interested are encouraged to come for a training session to meet with existing members and coaches.

During June the club holds adult sessions on Thursday evenings, from 7pm to 8.30pm at the Altwood School AstroTurf.

A 'back to hockey' programme of sessions is also being held over the summer to entice players who've maybe not picked up a hockey stick for some time back into the game

More information is available on the club's website; however, the sessions take place on Monday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm. Hockey sticks can be provided if required. Attendees will need to bring a gum shield, Astro boots and shin pads.
