Zico aiming to make a name for himself after signing for Dev’s Magpies

The name of Maidenhead United's latest signing certainly caught the eye when it was announced last week.

Zico is one of the most famous names in world football, however, ‘The White Pele' isn't being drafted across from current club, Kashima Antlers, to join the Magpies management team.

Instead, United have made Zico Asare their fourth signing of the summer with the defender joining from National League South outfit Oxford City having been on the books at Fulham before that.

Due to his age, 21, City are entitled to compensation and the club has been in talks with the Magpies over a suitable fee.

A quick, strong, and versatile defender, who can also play in midfield, Asare won international caps for England at u16s level.

Speaking to the Advertiser this week, Asare said: “There was interest for the past month or so really and then I decided around two weeks ago that I wanted to sign for Maidenhead.

“They were the best choice to be fair. I had a phone call with Alan (Devonshire) and he really sold it to me. I just thought this was a club where

I could progress and a club that matches my ambition.

“I am a right-sided defender. I can play at right-back and at centre-back if needed. I am a player that is quite strong, quick, decent on the ball. Any style of play, I believe I can adapt to it.

“I also played in the u15s and u16s for England. I had around 21 appearances when I was younger.

“That was a good experience definitely. It was a reward for your hard work. Being picked for your country shows that you are one of the best. It gives you a good feeling.

“I was at Fulham when I got called up. I was there for a very long time, probably 12 or 13 years. I enjoyed it a lot, but things just come to an end. I had to move on, but my time there made me the player I am today mainly because I was there for so long.”

Asare added: “I am excited for this new club, new league, new fans, new staff, and new players.

“It’s going to be a great experience for me. I am very excited for it because I feel like I can really push on.”
