Peters reflects on Magpies’ ‘worst display in weeks’

-

'Probably our worst performance in six weeks' is how assistant boss Ryan Peters reflected on Maidenhead United's disappointing 2-0 defeat at Woking on Saturday.

The result, in itself, wasn't a that surprising, given the two sides' respective positions in the table, but the fact the Magpies weren't able to lay a glove on their hosts was a source of frustration for Peters in his postmatch appraisal.

Having been shut out so effectively by Boreham Wood in Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat at York Road, the Magpies were once again held at arm's length as the Cards claimed a comfortable three points. Changes were made by Devonshire from the defeat against Boreham Wood - with Emile Acquah and Reece Smith dropped to the bench after picking up small knocks and Temi Eweka recalled from Slough Town to replace the injured Remy Clerima in central defence - however, Eweka aside, few in the Magpies' side covered themselves in glory.

“It’s probably our worst performance in about six weeks, and undoes everything that we’ve done in the last few weeks,” said Peters.

“Again, they’re a strong team like Boreham Wood, but we didn’t really impose ourselves on them at all.

“They were efficient at what they did, and I don’t think we had a shot on target which is disappointing.

“We made a few changes, and the idea behind that is that when those boys come in, they stake their claim.

“They didn’t really do that. I thought Woking spoiled our play quite quickly and they were efficient at what they did. They stopped our wide men and attacking players from getting on the ball.”

On the decision to drop Acquah and Smith, two of Maidenhead's key performers in recent weeks, Peters added: “Both of those boys had a knock, and we didn’t want to risk them with the amount of games we’ve got coming up. We’ve got some important games and we had to give them a rest when we could. We've got important games now against teams that are in and around us, so if you take points off them, you make things a little bit easier. We have to go into them with a little bit more determination and think back to the last four weeks when we had some good results.”
