Goal attacking to boost schools’ funds

-

MAIDENHEAD: In a switch of roles, children will be on the side-lines supporting their mums at a netball tournament this weekend.

Mothers from across the Royal Borough and surrounding areas will compete for a cash prize on behalf of their children’s schools at Braywick

Leisure Centre on Saturday.

England Netball’s south team leader, Debbie Spindlow said: “It’s great to see netball is so popular amongst mums in Maidenhead.”

‘Back to Netball Maidenhead’ sessions have been run by Gina MacGregor on Monday evenings at Furze Platt Senior School to hone the players’ skills before the Inter-PTA Netball Tournament.

Gina said: “Back to Netball sessions in Maidenhead are thriving.

“We have a range of abilities from those who haven’t picked up a netball since school to those who play every week but everyone joins in and has fun.”

Debbie added: “The success of initiatives such as Back to Netball and events like this Netball Tournament have helped to grow the popularity of the game to be one of the most popular team sports for women and girls.”

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, organised by M2M Events, founder, Nicky Cox said: “I’m delighted with the response to the tournament.

“It’s great to have a mixture of returning teams from the first tournament and new teams from local towns and villages.

“There was a great atmosphere last year and fingers crossed, we’ll have the weather to repeat that this year.”

Queen Street based estate agents, Oakwood Estates, will contribute the cash prize for the winning team.

Managing director, Josh Godfrey said they were ‘delighted’ to support the event for local parents.
